Blogging for My Credit Union

This (CUReadMyMind) is my personal blog. Personal in the sense that it's not associated in any way with the Credit Union at which I work, other than work is what I write about. In other words, it's not sanctioned by my employer. And, you aren't going to learn a lot about me personally (or my family) by reading this blog.

Sometimes I really struggle finding suitable topics to write about, knowing that my thoughts will be open for the world to read. I guess that's why I called it ReadMyMind. The tough part is, trying to be transparent and open with my thoughts on the job but knowing that there are some things I just can't write about. I've tried to stay away from topics where my writings would have to be measured and stick with those where I can be open, honest, and completely transparent. Frankly, as an IT Manager, those opportunities are few. So much depends on your audience and you just can't control who your audience might be in the blogosphere. But...I'll keep plugging away at it 'cause it's still fun.

I think I would like to start at "official" blog at my Credit Union. We don't currently run any blogs and I tend to think we're missing the boat. I'm thinking about blogging specifically about technology, and even more specifically, technology at my Credit Union. I believe there are a lot of members out there that would be interested in such topics. I'm looking at it as a way to start a conversation with members and learn from then how and what we could do better. Frankly, I hardly ever hear from members and that's not a good thing.

One topic that comes to mind quickly is our choice of Multi Factor Authentication products. Sound boring? Well, all of our on-line bankers have to deal with it and I'm betting that many of them would find it interesting to learn about the process we went through in choosing a vendor, what choices were available to us, why we made the choices we did, and what are plans are for the future. You just can't put that sort of stuff in the monthly newsletter!

Or, another good topic would be to discuss our plans for enhancing all our "eServices" offerings in the coming months. Or just talking about all the various technology products we implement every year. Anyway, I think it would be interesting.

I broached the topic last week with our VP of Marketing. She clearly wasn't too excited about the idea and I got the sense that she wished it would just go away. I think it makes her nervous to think of someone communicating with our members that is not "trained" somehow in marketing communications. We'll see...I think I made a good case.

Kirk, I commend you for your efforts. Have you been reading blogs done by other credit unions? That might give you some additional ideas for topics. A good. comprehensive source listing many of the credit unions who are blogging is on a site calle Open Source CU. I am a member of the board of a $20M CU in Northeastern NYS and I do a blog for members from the board. It's called the Boardcast and can be found at www.theboardcast.net. There is an article in the current Credit Union Magazine which talks about how credit unions are using Web 2.0 technology to reach out to members. You might want to show the article to the marketing person or the CEO at your credit union. You might also ask to do a presentation for your board.

Let me know if I can help.

Oh, by the way, if you or any of your coworkers are interested in the upcoming CUNA GAC, I just launched a Facebook group for those inteested the conference. It can be found at:

I think it's great that you are approaching your marketing department about starting a blog for your CU. Like Ginny mentioned, some of your best ammunition will be showing examples of how other CUs have succeeded with blogs. The other enormous factor is the potential interaction with your CU's members. I hope it all works out for you.
